A rare, but still fascinating find

It is believed to be the earliest known fossil of the extinct animal, a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth that dates back to the early Cretaceous period.

The specimen was unearthed by a local farmer in western Germany.

The tooth was discovered in a deep pit on the bank of the Oder River, in the western state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and has now been examined by experts at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig.

“It is the earliest fossil of a dinosaur known from the Cretzian period, and this is the oldest known specimen of a Tyrannosaur tooth, according to scientists,” the institute’s research head, Dr Georg Rehm, told Al Jazeera.

“This specimen is the first fossil from the Triassic period that we know of.”

In addition to the fossil, researchers also found other bones and teeth in the pit, including an articulated jaw.

A new species of dinosaur is the result of this excavation and it is known as a Tyrannotitan, which means “one who lives in the middle” in Latin.

“We knew the exact position of the fossil in the mud and in the bottom of the pit,” Giebrich told Alja-Tag.

“It is important to make sure the position is stable and the depth is stable, and that the structure is stable.

We used a dynamometer, which measures the forces that the body has to bear, to measure the strength of the bones and to see how strong they are.”

The team worked in tandem with the local authorities, as well as the regional research centre in the state of Lower Saxony.

“All these factors gave us the idea that we would find this fossil,” said Gieblich.

“The position was stable and stable enough to be possible, so we did not have to worry about the structure being unstable.
